Your Guide to West Chester’s Cultural Hotspots from The Hickman

April 18, 2024

One of the best things about living at The Hickman is its proximity to the array of activities, culture, and entertainment in our bustling borough. While many of the attractions are year-round, we’re starting to see the calendar of events kicking into high gear here in town as we inch closer to summer. Festivals, theater, art, live music, delicious cuisine … you name it, we’ve likely got it – and it’s all happening beyond our doorstep here at The Hickman! So, get your calendars ready and start penciling in all West Chester has to offer. You won’t want to miss out!

Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center

Venture just a couple blocks from The Hickman, and you’ll find a small-town theater reminiscent of days gone by—Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center. There’s something for everyone here: plays, musicals, comedy acts, musical tributes, and more. Catch a movie every Monday evening with their “Film for $5,” an inexpensive way to get out on the town and enjoy an old favorite. Even better, grab a bite to eat first at one of the many downtown restaurants and make a night of it.

Art Galleries

Downtown West Chester is home to several art galleries featuring the work of local artists. Additionally, the borough hosts a gallery walk twice each year—in the spring and again in the fall—with a map of various locations within walking distance of one other, each with a featured artist’s work on display. This year’s Spring Gallery Walk is coming up on May 3rd from 4-8 pm.

First Fridays

On the first Friday evening of each month, many downtown retail shops stay open late, offer sales, and host other fun events like Dueling Pianos, jazz concerts, and outdoor bands in the street. May’s First Friday falls on the 3rd and, as mentioned above, it will feature the Spring Gallery Walk. Worried about parking? No need – street-level parking is free after 5 pm on First Fridays!

 Gay Street Open-Air Market

What began during the pandemic to boost business for local restaurants and shop owners has become a popular seasonal mainstay downtown. From Matlack Street to Darlington Street, Gay Street will once again be closed to traffic on the weekends (Friday morning through Monday morning) from May 3 – September 29th. What a great way to shop, dine, and enjoy the sunshine!

West Chester Porchfest 2024

This day-long outdoor music festival is back for its third year on Saturday, May 18th, 2024, from 1-7pm. Participating residents in the borough’s southwest quadrant—from Church Street to Bradford Avenue and Miner Street to Price Street— offer their porches to rotations of live bands performing through the afternoon and evening. Several food trucks will be setting up shop in the neighborhood, so grab your lawn chair and make a day of it.

The Hickman has it all – and its location just blocks from all West Chester has to offer can’t be beat. When you’re here, you’re home.
