Holistic Wellness in Personal Care: Addressing Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Needs
March 4, 2025
The residents at The Hickman in Pennsylvania benefit from all the services and accommodations we offer, but one of the primary building blocks of the care we provide is our focus on holistic health and wellness. Each resident has their own unique strengths, needs, and preferences, and we effectively address these on a physical, emotional, and spiritual basis. Our motto is that when you’re here, you’re home, and we take this to heart in everything we do.
Physical Health and Well-Being
We take an active and focused interest in our residents’ physical health and well-being, and this includes all the following:
- Our partnership with well-respected physician groups
- Regular on-site visits from medical professionals
- Lab services
- Individualized therapy that is designed to address each resident’s specific physical needs
This is in addition to the delicious and nutritious meals we provide throughout the day. We employ a chef and full kitchen staff who provide enticing menus that are based on the season and that the residents participate in creating. Nutrition is integral to physical health, and we never lose sight of this fact.
Emotional Well-Being
The Hickman was founded by Quakers, and it remains true to primary Quaker beliefs, which place special emphasis on emotional well-being. Quaker principles are steeped in truth, which includes being truthful with ourselves about our emotions and feelings, and this extends to the care we provide each of our residents. Mental health is a key component of the spiritual journey each of us is on in relation to knowing ourselves, connecting with others, and building strong relationships, which guide all the services we provide.
Spiritual Well-Being
Spiritual care is a critical component of holistic – or well-rounded – assisted living and nursing home care. As we age, we come face to face with our mortality, and many of us consider this in the context of our core beliefs, which may include a specific religion but don’t necessarily. While The Hickman was founded on Quaker beliefs and remains true to them, we welcome residents from all religions and those who don’t consider themselves religious at all. Quakers value and embrace diversity and honor that of God in everyone, which melds nicely with our holistic approach and our unwavering focus on individualized care.
We Provide Care for Body, Mind, and Soul
At The Hickman, we take great pride in our Quaker origins and our commitment to providing each resident with holistic care that focuses on their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. This includes professional medical care with on-site accessibility, delicious and nutritious menus, the opportunity to look inward, and a focus on spiritual awareness that is inclusive. All of this supports fuller and more enriching lives for our residents.
