Rocking for a Cause: Highlights from The Hickman’s 2nd Annual Rock-A-Thon

October 26, 2023

As we eagerly prepare for our 3rd Annual Rock-A-Thon on October 17, 2024, we reflect on the incredible success of last year’s event. On October 19, 2023, The Hickman Friends Senior Community in West Chester, Pennsylvania, hosted its highly anticipated 2nd Annual Rock-A-Thon. The event, held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on The Hickman patio, was a resounding success, bringing together residents, staff, board members, and the broader community for a day of music, fun, and philanthropy.

A Day of Music and Merriment

The Rock-A-Thon kicked off under clear autumn skies, creating the perfect setting for a day of festivities. Attendees were treated to a fantastic lineup of musicians, including the talented Bill Hake from the renowned music duo Hake and Jarema. The live music set the tone for a lively and joyous atmosphere, with residents and guests tapping their feet and dancing to the beat.

Community Support and Notable Guests

Notable community figures, including Mayor Lillian DeBaptiste, PA Representative Chris Pielli, and members of the West Chester Police Department, attended the event. Their attendance underscored the strong community ties and the importance of supporting local initiatives that benefit residents of The Hickman.

Fundraising for Our Residents

The primary goal of the Rock-A-Thon is to raise funds for the Residents Assistance Fund (RAF), which provides financial support to residents whose funds have dwindled. This fund ensures that residents continue to receive the care and support they need while maintaining the safety and security of their homes.

Toni Kelly, Executive Director of The Hickman, expressed the community’s commitment: “Our residents are family to us. This is their home. We do all we can to assure their safety and security while having a bit of fun.” This dedication reflects the deeply rooted values of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) principles, which guide The Hickman’s mission.

Gratitude to Sponsors and Partners

The Rock-A-Thon’s success was made possible by the generous support of sponsors and partners. Rita Brouwer-Ancher, Director of Advancement at The Hickman, said about our sponsors: “Their contribution will have a lasting impact on the lives of our residents. Partnerships like these are cornerstones of this safe and secure home.”

Rocking Chair Marathon and More

One of the day’s highlights was the rocking chair marathon, where participants took turns keeping the chairs moving for hours. This unique event not only symbolized the Rock-A-Thon but also brought smiles and laughter to all involved. Participants also enjoyed a Rock ‘n’ Roll costume contest, showcasing some incredible outfits and sparking playful debates about the best guitarists of the genre.

Looking Ahead

The Hickman is already looking forward to this year’s event. The 3rd Annual Rock-A-Thon is scheduled for October 17, 2024, promising even more excitement and community engagement.
