Centenarian Spotlight: Thelma Joseph at 102
As we continue our Centenarian Spotlight Series, we’re honored to share another extraordinary story from right here at The Hickman. With five women in our community who have each celebrated 100 years or more, it’s a joy to shine a light on their remarkable journeys.
Today, we introduce Mrs. Thelma Joseph, who turned 102 this past June.
A Life of Purpose: From Brooklyn to Yale and Beyond
Born on June 1, 1921, in Brooklyn, New York, Thelma’s journey began with a passion for helping others. She studied nursing at Brooklyn College and continued her education at Yale University, where she met her future husband, Dr. Clifford Joseph.
Their shared careers in healthcare took them from coast to coast, eventually settling in Torrington, CT, where Clifford opened a pediatric practice and Thelma focused on raising their four sons—Peter, Robert, Kenneth, and David.
A Career Reimagined and Reignited
Once her children were older, Thelma returned to her passion—nursing and education. She taught nursing students in a local hospital program and later served as a substitute school nurse well into her 90s. Her unwavering commitment to learning and care inspired everyone around her.
70 Countries, One Lifelong Love of Travel
Together, Thelma and Clifford explored over 70 countries. Even after Clifford’s passing in 2010, Thelma continued traveling into her mid-90s, embodying an adventurous spirit and zest for life.
A Life Still Filled with Curiosity and Joy
Today, Thelma enjoys baking, knitting, classical music, and crossword puzzles. Her love of learning and her devotion to family remain central to her life. She is a proud mother, grandmother to seven, and great-grandmother to four—and a beloved member of The Hickman community.
We are privileged to honor her as part of our centenarian series, and we thank her for the light she brings to those around her.
