Centenarian Spotlight: Anne O’Brien at 100

In the next chapter of our Centenarian Spotlight Series at The Hickman, we’re proud to introduce another remarkable resident: Mrs. Anne O’Brien, who celebrated her 100th birthday on September 22, 2024.
Anne’s life has been one of resilience, faith, and integrity—from growing up in a coal town during the Great Depression to serving with the U.S. Army during World War II, to raising a large family and giving back to her community.

A Childhood of Simplicity and Strength

Born in Pottsville, PA, in Schuylkill County, Anne was one of eight children in a close-knit, faith-filled family. Though money was scarce during the Depression, she remembers those days fondly—picnicking on the mountain, attending mass with her family, and getting lost in books at the local library.

She graduated salutatorian from Pottsville Catholic High School in 1942, already demonstrating the drive that would shape her life’s path.

Answering the Call: A Career in Service During WWII

Anne began as a court stenographer but quickly stepped up when her brother was drafted, moving to Fort Meade to support her sister-in-law and join the U.S. Army workforce. She later transferred to Fort Indiantown Gap, where she worked as a Claims Specialist—coordinating military supply logistics during wartime.

Despite the challenges of war, Anne found purpose in her work and a deep sense of fulfillment in contributing to her country’s efforts.

Rooted in West Chester and Devoted to Family

In 1947, Anne married Joe O’Brien and together they raised eight children. They relocated to West Chester in 1960, joining St. Agnes Church, where Anne remains a dedicated member.

Later, she returned to the workforce at Nationwide Insurance and, in retirement, gave back through volunteer work at Chester County Hospital.

An Enduring Legacy of Honesty and Heart

Today, Anne is a loving “Nana” to 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her life is guided by values passed down from her own mother—including her favorite quote from Shakespeare: “This above all: to thine own self be true.”

Anne embodies those words through a life of honesty, loyalty, and compassion, qualities that continue to inspire everyone who knows her.
