Honoring Betsy Stratton: 2026 Commitment to Caring Award Recipient

January 21, 2026

At The Hickman, the Commitment to Caring Award honors individuals whose leadership, service, and connection to our community reflect the heart of our Mission. In 2026, we are proud to present this award to Betsy Stratton, whose guidance and commitment helped shape one of the most consequential chapters in The Hickman’s history.

Betsy’s connection to The Hickman spans generations. Her family’s history with our community runs deep, and as a Quaker, Betsy believes deeply in the principles that guide The Hickman—respect for all people, thoughtful stewardship, integrity, and community. These values informed her leadership and decision-making during moments when they mattered most.

Betsy’s tenure as Board Chair coincided with a period of significant challenge for The Hickman. Leadership transitions, periods of uncertainty, and the unprecedented realities of a global pandemic tested the organization. Throughout it all, Betsy provided calm resolve and clarity. As Matt Krasney, Treasurer, reflected, “Betsy never wavered in her dedication to the residents, the staff, the Board, and the Mission. Her leadership consistently combined strength with genuine care.”

Vice-Chair Stephen Olsen noted, ” When The Hickman faced uncertainty, Betsy provided the leadership needed to guide the organization forward and support long-term sustainability. Her ability to listen, build trust, and focus the Board on what mattered most helped restore stability and confidence during a pivotal time.”

One of Betsy’s most enduring contributions has been her partnership with Executive Director Toni Kelly and the Board in advancing The Hickman’s long-term vision. Together, they strengthened the organization’s foundation and reinforced a culture centered on stewardship and sustainability. As Toni Kelly shared at the award ceremony, “Your steady presence, thoughtful counsel, and generous spirit have strengthened our Board and inspired our leadership team. Your legacy is woven into the progress we have made and the future we are now ready to embrace.”

That shared leadership continues to guide The Hickman’s commitment to providing affordable senior living in the Greater West Chester community, most notably through the renovation of the Nathaniel Hickman House. As we look ahead to 2026 and beyond, we celebrate Betsy Stratton with deep gratitude. Her Commitment to Caring is woven into our past, present, and future, and her legacy will continue to guide The Hickman for generations to come.
