Faith, Spirituality, and Belonging at The Hickman
September 26, 2026
Faith and spirituality can remain meaningful sources of comfort, connection, and purpose throughout life. When considering a personal care community, older adults and their families may want to understand how residents can continue practicing their faith or exploring their spiritual interests after a move.
The Hickman’s Quaker heritage informs our commitment to welcoming and respecting each person. Residents of all faith traditions—as well as those who do not follow a particular faith—are valued members of our diverse community.
Our Quaker Heritage
The Hickman’s story began with two Quaker women who recognized a need within their community and responded through service. Their work established a foundation of care that continues to guide The Hickman today.
Quakerism, also known as the Religious Society of Friends, emphasizes values such as equality, integrity, simplicity, peace, and stewardship. At The Hickman, these values are reflected in our respect for each resident’s individuality, beliefs, experiences, and choices.
Residents do not need to be Quaker to live at The Hickman. Our community welcomes people of all backgrounds and respects the many ways individuals find meaning, comfort, and connection.
Supporting Residents’ Spiritual Lives
Spiritual needs and preferences are personal. Some residents value regular religious observance, while others may find meaning through meditation, reflection, education, music, or time shared with others.
The Hickman offers and coordinates a variety of spiritual and religious opportunities within our community, including:
- Mindful meditation twice each week
- Educational programs exploring different faiths and traditions
- Recognition and celebration of faith traditions beyond Christianity
- A weekly Catholic prayer service with Communion
- Visits from clergy and other religious leaders
- Assistance coordinating religious activities based on residents’ individual needs and preferences
Providing these opportunities within The Hickman makes spiritual connection more accessible to residents who may no longer drive or find it difficult to attend services elsewhere.
Residents are always free to determine whether and how they participate. Our role is to create opportunities and help residents maintain the practices and connections that are meaningful to them.
A Community Where Everyone Is Welcome
The Hickman’s Quaker heritage is expressed not by asking residents to share one set of religious beliefs, but through a commitment to respecting the dignity and individuality of every person.
Whether faith is central to a resident’s daily life, a quiet source of comfort, or not part of their experience at all, they are welcomed and valued at The Hickman.
