The Hickman continually strives to be a vibrant and active member of the West Chester community. Throughout the year residents, friends, family and neighbors have the opportunity to get together at our many enjoyable special events.
On the third Wednesday of June, July & August the Hickman features free concerts on our lawn that are open to the public. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and join our residents, friends and neighbors in celebrating the summer with an evening of great music! A schedule of performances will appear on our homepage during the concert season.

Twice yearly, on the first Friday of June and October, the Hickman participates in the West Chester Chamber of Commerce’s “Gallery Walk”. We open our doors and invite the community at large to come enjoy wine and cheese while they view the artwork of and interact with a featured artist. The artist’s work remains on exhibit for the entire month for the enjoyment of our residents and guests
Aloha! Come and enjoy a relaxed evening in the islands The Hickman way! Wear your grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts and leis as you enjoy live island music and hula dancing. Held in June, the Luau features the best in island fare including fresh shrimp cocktail bar, sweet & sour chicken kabobs, baked ham with pineapple leis, Honolulu fruit punch and Pina Colada cake for dessert!
Howdy Partner! Bring your cowboy hat and come enjoy some down home country cooking and live Bluegrass music. Held in August, the Hoe-Down features a pig-roast, a chance to be “deputized” by the County Sheriff and a caricaturist and clowns for the young folks! Menu items include country fried chicken, fresh corn on the cob, potato salad, lemonade and apple pie with ice cream!
“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”. The Hickman’s annual Valentine’s Day dinner features a formal sit-down dinner, love poems read by Executive Director John Schwab and live harp music during dinner.
Time to clean out your closets, basements and garages! Held in early June, the Resident Yard Sale is open to residents, friends, neighbors and the community at large. Not only an opportunity for the community and residents to come together, but a great way to unload all those “surplus items”!
The Hickman’s annual fundraiser to support The Hickman Expansion Project, The Art of Caring is an evening of fun, fine food, entertainment and a live and silent auction featuring distinctive and unique items! Held in October, The Hickman sees its already lovely terrace transformed into a charming gala event under a beautifully decorated tent. For more information please see the Art of Caring page of this website.
Held the evening following the Art of Caring, this resident event is a lovely evening on The Hickman terrace featuring live music, a sampling of delicious desserts, coffee, cider and wine. The crisp autumn air coupled with the twinkling lights in the tent make for a magical night!
If it’s October, it must be chili time! After many years of participation The Hickman’s “Knock You Off Your Rocker Chili” finally captured the coveted First Place Award for non-profits at the annual West Chester Rotary Club Chili Cook off in 2010. Our residents are the real winners as they get to enjoy the chili without leaving The Hickman!
