All gifts are deductible as provided by law. For income tax purposes, a gift is counted in the calendar year in which it is given, and any payments toward a pledge are deductible in the calendar year that they are made.

The Hickman was established in 1891 out of a basic human need that was recognized by a group of caring and strong women, led by Sallie Sharpless and Lydia Hall. They saw the suffering of older women in the community who had little or no financial resources and they vowed to provide a loving and secure home for them. Over 123 years later, charitable giving still provides tremendous support that enhances the quality of life for our residents. The generosity of our donors allows us to provide financial assistance to residents who may have exceeded their retirement savings due to circumstances beyond their control. Gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations allow us to make capital improvements to our beautiful, historic campus. New programs and activities are also often the result of the generosity of caring supporters.

It is our mission to provide the highest quality care possible in the most cost effective way, allowing The Hickman to be an affordable alternative for senior community living and personal care in a desirable neighborhood. Your support is put to immediate and good use in helping us fulfill that mission.

United Way Donor Choice

Please consider The Hickman for your donor choice gifts!

Many United Way organizations allow donors the flexibility and discretion to direct their gifts to specific charitable organizations. When you select The Hickman, you have the added benefit of participating in the United Way Campaign while supporting our people and programs.

It is easy! Simply ask your workplace campaign representative for Donor Choice information and complete the necessary designation forms. It is especially helpful if you send a copy to the Development Office (400 N. Walnut Street, West Chester, PA, 19380) for our records.

If you participate in the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania Campaign, our Donor Choice number is #10572. We will be listed by our full name – The Hickman Friends Senior Community of West Chester.

Securities

Contributions of long-term appreciated securities give you double benefits: a charitable deduction for the full present fair market value, and no tax on the appreciation. Should the securities you wish to contribute have a loss, consider selling them and donating the proceeds which will allow you to recognize the loss deduction. In either case, please consult your tax or financial advisor to be sure you are making the wisest selection.

Tangible Personal Property or Gifts-in-Kind

Art objects, antiques and other in-kind gifts are tangible personal property and are accepted on a case by case basis in consultation with the Development Director. Their value as a tax deduction will be based upon IRS regulations.

IRA Charitable Rollover

If you are looking for a way to offset income from a required distribution from your traditional IRA, why not consider an IRA Charitable Rollover? The Hickman is a qualified nonprofit charitable organization, so your donation can benefit you tax-wise, while supporting the mission of The Hickman to provide affordable care and services for modest income seniors. For more information, please contact Charles “Ebbie” Alfree at 484-760-6416 or calfree@thehickman.org

Real Estate

Whether your property has increased or decreased in value, it can be given with substantial benefit to both the donor and The Hickman. There are many ways to make a gift of property including an outright gift, a retained life estate, making a bargain sale, gifting property by will, or using property to fund a charitable remainder trust. These gifts are accepted on a case by case basis in consultation with the Charles “Ebbie” Alfree, Director of Advancement and your financial advisor.

Life Insurance Policies

The gift of a life insurance policy is an ideal way to fulfill your charitable desires. A gift of life insurance does not reduce your income, and you may receive significant income tax reductions. There are several options for making such a gift.

For more information on these options, please contact Charles “Ebbie” Alfree, Director of Advancement, at 484-760-6416 or at calfree@thehickman.org.

The Hickman is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, which means all gifts are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Gifts of all sizes are gratefully accepted.

The official registration and financial information of The Hickman may be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of State by calling toll free, within Pennsylvania, 1 (800) 732-0999. Registration does not imply endorsement.
