Donald Pywell
Presented by The Stratton & Mack Families
Donald Pywell began his artistic
career studying painting at the Philadelphia College of Art. While there
his interest turned to sculpture and then to goldsmithing, which he terms
“a form of sculpture, but in miniature.” In 1971 he established a studio
in Chadds Ford, where his work attracted the attention of both Andrew Wyeth
and his wife, Betsy. He has been the Wyeth’s personal jeweler ever since,
creating both commissioned pieces for the family and a diverse body of
sculptural work based on elements in Wyeth’s paintings. Pywell was also
commissioned to create the reproductions for the Metropolitan Museum of
Art during the 1980’s King Tutankhamen exhibit and tour. HIs work has been
featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, the Washington Post,
and Connoisseur Magazine. Don’s tilt-top table exhibits the meticulous
attention to detail for which his gold and silver works are famous. The
striking blue raised patterns gracing both sides of the table were created
with slices of bamboo from the stand outside of the artist’s studio. In
the center of the reverse side, you can glimpse a hidden heart of metal. |

"For this table, I put together
some of my favorite elements in a painting riff on Matisse's Goldfish Bowl:
checkered tablecloth, bold, lively leaves and flowers, goldfish and cats,
and humor, all in orange and turquiose. I had fun with this painting -
it was a nice break from my current sculpting work. I hope you enjoy it
too, for this wonderful fun-d-raising event for The Hickman." - Ann Rae |

 Linda Saboe |
Linda Saboe
Presented by The Hickman Board of Managers
Linda Saboe has been in love
with animal and human anatomy since she drew her first horse at the age
of two. Though largely self-taught, Linda studied art at the University
of New Mexico, and supplemented her education at local art centers. Linda
recently retired from her position at Villanova University to pursue her
interests in art, digital photographic restoration, herbalism, energy healing
and yoga. The mother of two grown men, she shares her home in Berwyn with
her husband, dog, birds and a rather large iguana named Spike. Using the
Green Man as central to the theme of Spiritual Ecology, Linda portrays
the wild, messy lushness of nature, which, despite all our attempts to
make nature conform to our civilized sense of order, invades our manicured
lawns and scruffs up our neat borders as soon as we avert our eyes or turn
our backs. Linda has included animals and plants that hold special meaning
for her. The animals are Blue Jay, Cardinal, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Tiger
Salamander, Swallow Tail Butterfly, Honey Bee, Lady Bug, Dragonfly, Black
Ants and one wayward Red Ant. The plants include Purple Coneflower, Wisteria,
Grape, Cattails, Chicory, Feverfew, Lavender and the irrepressible Dandelion.
Jealous of the attention their friends were receiving, a few of the faeries
that live in Linda's yard insisted on modeling as well, though they refused
to give their names. (How could she say no?) |

 Don Shoffner |
Don Shoffner
Presented by Sue Hartz, Robbe Healey & John Schwab
Don Shoffner grew up in Chester County, PA anchored by three centuries of family tradition, amid the old buildings, barns, and bridges that fill his works. His challenge is to try and capture their utility, texture and integrity before they disappear from our landscape. Working in watercolor and India ink, his works depict fall and winter scenes in their subdued hues. His seascapes reflect the peaceful nature and warmth of the Southshore and bring a certain balance. After graduating from West Chester University, he studied textile design at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences, gaining new appreciation for texture and composition. For the past 25 years, Don has been a participant in numerous group shows and associations both in Pennsylvania and New England. He was commissioned to paint the 2005 holiday card for the ARC of Chester County. Working with the Redesign Group, Don has completed production of a toile fabric incorporating seven scenes of the historic Quaker community at Buck Hill Falls. Most recently, his painting "Winter Skies" was awarded the first place ribbon at the 61st annual Buck Hills Fine Arts Festival.

Presented by First National Bank
Betsy Elliott Zukin is a graduate
of the University of the Arts and received her M.F.A from Tyler School
of Art. Betsy received both the Faculty and Renzetti Awards while attending
the University of the Arts and was granted the Russell Conwell Fellowship
by Tyler School of Art. Her work is featured in Visions by Dr. Steven C.
Schachter. Betsy has shown her work in multi-media events with visual art,
music and performance at the Prince Music Theater, Philadelphia, and has
performed and displayed her work at the Painted Bride Art Center, Philadelphia.
Her work has been in shows throughout the country. Betsy was taught to
sew, and embroider when she was 5 years old by her great aunt. Teaching
art to children has always been a passion. Her art work primarily consists
of repetitive patterns, often using found objects. The repetition is a
motif from textiles, each thread is a form on its own, when unified they
becomes a pattern or object. The tilt-top table is printed using a combination
of hand carved and vintage print blocks. The tilt top table to her is a
traditional form which develops into a sculptural form. It is decorated
on the bottom with Venetian glass tile, and hand woven fabric. The table
stands on its own as a sculptural form whether upside down or right side
up. |
